I am really enjoying this camera. Pictures are crisp and there are a lot of fun little modes to use.
I am having a lot of fun with the super slow motion.

I had high hopes for this camera, but it falls short.

Pros:
- Takes decent pictures when there's enough light
- Video is nice

Cons:
- Too slow to focus and capture shots
- Tries to compensate for low light by using F2. 0 lens, but ends up with blurry pictures (better to have a faster sensor)
- Expensive

I tested this against the Panasonic DMC-ZS7 and ended up with the Panasonic which is much faster focusing and capturing the shot correctly. Only downside is that the Panasonic isn't as small and stylish as the Canon.

I thought my SD1000 was an amazing camera, but the new lens on the SD4000 is even more breathtaking. Great shots!

The Fuji S 7000 has these slow shutter speeds:
15, 12, 10, 8, 6, 5, 4 seconds.
It can interpolate its 6 megapixel image to 12 megapixes.
It has a 55 mm filter mount and manual focus ring.
It requires a circular polarization filter if you use that, because of the polarized internal exposer sensor.
The lens is a Fujinon Super EBC 6x zoom. + 3. 2 digital zoom
It has this ISO capability:
• Auto (ISO 160 - 800)
• ISO 200
• ISO 400
• ISO 800 (at 3, 2 or 1 MP only)

I have not tried it with astro-photography. I like it a lot though.
Good luck. I think the finepix is a good brand to check out. My camera is old by now. I am sure there are better finepix out there now. . .
;-D Happy astrophotography!

Nikon D70 digital SLR, Canon EOS 10D, Nikon Coolpix 850/9xx, Olympus 20xx/30xx, and Casio QV xxxx.

Or, if you really want to get into it, something like a Lumenera SKYnyx2-2 Color CCD Astrophotography Camera

I ended up returning this at my BIG BLUE RETAIL STORE for one irritating reason: Too expensive.
Too expensive if compared to what the canon s90 offers that the sd4000 can't: Flexibility in controls.
What you get with the sd4000 & not from the s90: HD recording.
What you get with the canon s90 & not from the sd4000: Manual controls right at your fingertips.
Since I could care less about HD movie recording & appreciate LOW-LITE performance more than anything else (on a digital camera), I ended up repurchasing a canon s90 (online) - that was about $20 CHEAPER than the canon sd4000is.

One may argue that the sd4000is is smaller than the s90. Not by much. It's only thinner & the s90 is still very much a pocket camera. For those looking for a fully-automatic point n shoot w/ low lite performance, you can't go wrong with either one. For those who could care less about aperture, iso, exposure, & scene modes at a turn of a dial, the sd4000 will satisfy.

Otherwise, I recommend the canon s90 for its sheer innovation in flexibility. . . AT A LOWER PRICE.

Also, another downer with the sd4000. . . more noise & lack of RAW output.

Ok, Here is the thing. I have been waiting for a compact camera to come out with this feature set (f 2. 0, hd movie, and wide angle). The SD4000 satisfies the first two as I still wished it had a wider angle. The Panasonic LX3 seems most attractive but I have been waiting for something more recent to come out, besides the HD movie on the LX3 is only 24 fps. The S90 was another candidate but the movie there is VGA only. I want the wide aperture for artistic shallow depth of field photos and low light performance. And yes, I want this in a compact camera as there is no point of lugging along a huge camera or missing out on photo moments because your cam is too big to be there with you. I am giving the background here since it may still be a useful camera to other people.

The reason I did not like this camera was that its seemingly good camera features do not translate to good photos. Maybe because the sensor is too small. Who knows? The colors of the pictures produced with the sd4000 were very unrealistic. . . too primary and strong in the reds and even the light blues. The colors were so bad that they became the deal breaker for me. Canon's quality seems to be getting worse. I paid $350 for this product because I am picky and expect to get what I paid for which did not happen in this case. I am giving it two stars (not 1) only because this is the first review for the camera and didn't want to bias everyone. Maybe it will be liked by others but even then I don't see why pay the high price.
To me the SD4000 is no different than any average compact. If you are wondering how it compares to the S90, the S90 produces slightly better pictures but neither one is good enough. I have not tried the LX3 yet so cannot advise on that front. I hope this is useful.

Try searching for the Canon 20Da. Yes, that's a dSLR. It's a factory modified 20D. . . modified to be good at astral photography. I'm guessing that it will lead you to hobby sites with great tips for compact cameras, too!
